A satellite telecommunication and internet-based seismic monitoring system for enhanced volcanic eruption forcasting, early warning, and risk management.
In the EU, over a million people are directly threatened by volcanic hazards. Every year thousands of seismic events are recorded in these volcanic regions. Although empirical evidence suggests that there is a relationship between the type of earthquake and volcanic activity, there is still insufficient understanding and reliable data to be able to determine the precise nature of this relationship. In order to improve the accuracy of predicting volcanic eruptions, it is therefore necessary to establish a quantitative relationship between the dynamic behaviour of magmatic and hydro-geothermal systems and the nature and occurrence of the related seismicity. The principal objective of e-Ruption is to design and develop a prototype Internet and telecommunication-based seismic monitoring and early warning system for improved prediction of volcanic eruptions.
e-Ruption will create a prototype network forecasting and early warning system based on the analysis and classification of diagnostic seismic signals that are precursors to volcanic activity. In addition to this the system will provide risk information on potential volcanic eruptions to environmental and civil protection agencies at volcanically active sites. Volcanologists, environmental and civil protection personnel, and the general public will have access to a database server system in real time via the Internet and high-bandwidth terrestrial and satellite communication networks.
